Understanding Ghana's Personal Income Tax Brackets
Published 15 January 2024
Ghana uses a graduated tax system for personal income tax, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. The current brackets are set by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and are updated periodically.
Current Tax Brackets (2024)
The following brackets apply to annual chargeable income:
- First GHS 4,380 — 0% (Tax-free threshold)
- Next GHS 1,320 — 5%
- Next GHS 1,560 — 10%
- Next GHS 36,000 — 17.5%
- Next GHS 196,740 — 25%
- Next GHS 360,000 — 30%
- Exceeding GHS 600,000 — 35%
How It Works
The graduated system means you do not pay the highest rate on your entire income. Instead, each portion of your income is taxed at the rate for that bracket. This is why your effective tax rate is always lower than your marginal (highest) tax rate.
Using the Calculator
Our Income Tax Calculator automatically applies these brackets to show you exactly how much tax you owe. Try it at the Calculators section.
Important Notes
- These rates apply to employment income, business income, and investment income for resident individuals - Non-resident individuals are taxed at a flat rate of 25% on Ghana-sourced income - Certain income types may have different treatment (e.g., capital gains)
